Currently the average Major League Soccer (MLS) team is worth $157 million; there has been an increase of more than 50 percent in the last two years. Forbes has compiled the list of the league’s most valuable teams. To arrive at this list, financial data from the 2014 season was considered; the same was obtained from stadium leases, published reports and interviews with industry sources.
Here are the top 10 most valuable MLS teams as of 2015, according to Forbes.
10) San Jose Earthquakes
Current value: $145 million; 2014 revenue: $13 million; 2014 operating income: -$1 million
The San Jose Earthquakes moved into their own Avaya Stadium from Santa Clara’s Buck Shaw Stadium. The attendance is up 75 percent year-over-year.
9) FC Dallas
Current value: $146 million; 2014 revenue: $25 million; 2014 operating income: -$3 million)
FC Dallas’ home stadium Frisco’s Toyota Stadium has hosted events other than MLS games. In 2015 it hosted two Gold Cup matches.
8) New England Revolution
Current value: $158 million; 2014 revenue: $25 million; 2014 operating income: $7 million
The New England Revolution is currently using the Gillette Stadium, which is owned by the team and the Kraft family. The team is in look out for a new soccer-specific home.
7) Chicago Fire
Current value: $160 million; 2014 revenue: $21 million; 2014 operating income: -$6 million
Chicago Fire added its former forward Brian McBride as an assistant coach for a short term assignment. The team has a naming rights agreement (for the facility on Chicago’s north side) with The PrivateBank.
